Tolls and Florida
The gas tax is the primary funding mechanism for transportation in the State of Florida. Unlike the federal gas tax, Florida’s gas tax is indexed to inflation. This means that a 6 cent per gallon tax this year will increase by the cost of inflation every year there after. This is better than most states since legislators don’t have to publicly support these annual increases. However, it is not enough to keep pace with the growth that Florida is experiencing. Tolls are a viable and fair complement to the gas tax. It is important for transportation professionals in Florida to support tolling as an added source of revenue.
